My mum, she experienced WWII a bit too close for comfort as a young child, was forced to leave the home she loved, was a refugee in Denmark for a couple of years together with my grandma. Then believing her dad was still alive they moved to the GDR and received the bad news grandpa was no more. Stayed in the GDR for a few years until they could escape through a ruse and join my great grandma in Berlin. She loved living in Berlin. She found my dad (that’s a story I am not sure about and I never asked) but I know they wrote each other letters.
My Swiss dad swept her off her feet and she joined him in Switzerland. She learnt Swiss German so quickly I really can’t remember her ever speaking in German to me unless she read a book to me.
They got married and a year later I arrived. And almost 60 years later I was diagnosed with autism and ADHD and whenever I speak to her and we talk about my sensory issues she says that’s how she feels. And tells me about things that bother her.
I keep thinking this autistic ADHDer has seen the absolute the worst in humanity, was forced to leave everything behind, was nearly blown out of the water, had to deal with hatred and yet her joy for life at the age of 86 is just amazing and heart warming.
I love her so much!

I celebrate my daughter. She is brave and courageous and has dealt with a hidden illness all her life. She shows me what strength is and always does it with a smile xx
