Are you doing the laundry wrong? 🤭

Are you doing the laundry wrong? 🤭

Last week we shared a simple washing machine tip on our socials... and we couldn't believe the response! 😂

Over 500,000 people watched it, thousands shared it with friends and family, and the comments made us realise that lots of people have never actually been shown what the different washing machine compartments are for.

And it makes sense as traditional laundry brands don't exactly teach people how to use their products!

So if you've ever wondered where your detergent, conditioner or stain remover should go, we've put together a guide for you below! 🥳

My washing machine is on strike until you bring back Celestial. It told me to tell you and did this pouty face:😒🙂‍↔️😶‍🌫️.. 😁.

This is basic knowledge when purchasing/using an automatic washing machine, the same as learning which programme on the dial is for what fabrics. I personally prefer to use a dosing ball in the drum for the stain remover and shampoo. I don’t use pre-wash, otherwise the stain remover powder works best in tray ‘II’ (with the shampoo). I watched a video on Tik Tok of stain remover powder being put in the fabric softener compartment lol 😆 Maybe clearer basic instructions on all laundry products are required.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Really!

I have always put the laundry detergent in the “I” tray, (conditioner in the “flower symbol” tray), and never used the pre-wash programme. But the washing machine sends water to both the “I” and the “II” trays 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️.

Seriously…how do people not know this?! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Looking at the comments, some of your customers are vile and bitter (Victoria Bailey). What has potty training got to with laundry? Get a life. Start making videos showing people how to do things if you’re so bothered.

I agree that Rain and Salted Moss should be a shampoo and Conditioner :)

Lucy Potucek August 04, 2026

How do people not know this? Is this clickbait from Tallow & Ash, as this is insane.

Victoria Bailey August 04, 2026

Not surprised by this at all. Some parents don’t potty train their kids before they begin primary school, nor do they teach their children how to use cutlery, so I’m not surprised some people have no idea how to correctly dose a washing machine. Perhaps we need an education system that prepares children for adulthood and teaches them how to be a “good human”, so life isn’t such a shock when it arrives!

I do my laundry line this but at gone 60 I would flipping hope I know how to use a washing machine.
I didn’t have a scoop either, guessed they weren’t supplied which was surprising ☹️so searched through old scoops etc that had been included in other products found one that was the right amount. Putting one in would be more helpful.

Helen August 04, 2026

Wait?! What?! There’s a scoop??? Was I supposed to get a scoop with my stain remover? There was nothing in the box so I’ve been weighing it out!!

Some machines have an automatic detergent dispenser (auto-dose). On these models, you fill a detergent reservoir once, and the machine dispenses the right amount for each wash. Depending on how often you do laundry, one fill can last anywhere from a couple of weeks to around a month. – so not sure we are teaching the next generation how to wash properly like her grandma’s used to do

This is so funny. Don’t people read the instruction manuals these days. 🤔🧐

claire August 04, 2026

Do parents not show their children how to use a washing machine when they are younger or to read the informational booklets that come with your new machine . This is worrying if people genuinely don’t know how to wash their clothes 😔

I do know what the washing machine symbols are for, but my quandary is, when using washing liquid in the 2 lined compartment, that it starts to drain away before the drawer is closed, so does that mean that not all the liquid is being used. I only put powder in that compartment and use a liquid ball in the drum for your shampoos.

I agre with Karen Bagnall. Rain and Salted Moss would be amazing for the laundry.

Sharon Lee August 04, 2026

I didn’t think anyone didn’t know this 🤔…it is stated in the manual and if you lost that can always Google for answers! I am surprised 😲

Jill Mcintyre August 04, 2026

I really can’t believe people didn’t know this ,every washing machine I’ve ever had explains what these compartments are for .

Karen Bagnall August 04, 2026
